Oscar De La Hoya Throws Verbal Jabs At Canelo vs Munguia Presser
Patrick Breen/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

Everyone knew it was bound to happen and that eventually, things would go nuclear between Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya & undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. The explosion took place on Wednesday afternoon as Canelo and his opponent on Saturday night, Jaime Munguia, held their final press conference before Friday’s weigh-in.

Since the press conference in Beverly Hills, CA, tensions have been high, as it was the first time since their split that Canelo and De La Hoya have been that close to each other. FightsATW was there reporting live from the press conference, and you could see Canelo clinching his fists when De La Hoya took the podium. At no time did either man look at each other, and De La Hoya, seeming annoyed while telling FightsATW that he was involved throughout the whole negotiation process for the fight, contrary to what Canelo had said. Canelo would then make disparaging comments towards De La Hoya on multiple media platforms as to why they split and the reason they were still not on speaking terms.

De La Hoya stepped to the podium in Las Vegas on Wednesday  with a prepared speech to ensure the message was clear. After discussing the event for a few seconds, he went on to say that he was with Canelo during the failed drug tests and surgeries that made him a global superstar. Then De La Hoya had a mic drop moment and said, “The company you fought under for (a decade) has always had one name, and that’s mine. So put some f*ckin’ respect on it!” That set Canelo off, and he got up and quickly walked towards De La Hoya, but people got in between them.

After cursing at De La Hoya, Canelo sat down, and after making some comments in Spanish, he interrupted the translator and said in English what he had just said in Spanish. “He tried to steal money. He’s a f*cking asshole. That’s what I said. He’s a f*cking asshole. He tried to keep the attention on him, not on Munguia. That’s what he do.” At this point, the temperature in the room skyrocketed, and the presser concluded shortly after.

The Canelo-De La Hoya moment was bound to happen, and a riled-up Canelo said he would knock out Munguia, which prompted Munguia to let the media know that he would stop Canelo within eight rounds. This was already one of the most anticipated fights this year, but after this presser, it’s gone several levels higher, making Saturday night a mega event.

In case you missed it, here are some of the quotes from the presser.

CANELO ALVAREZ

“This is going to be a great Mexican war. Munguia and I both come to win, but I am going to win and win decisively. The fans are really going to enjoy Saturday night and I’m proud to make history with two Mexican fighters fighting for all four belts.

“I feel better than ever and I’m ready for this fight. I don’t know how many rounds it’s going to go, but the Mexican fans are going to love this fight.

“I don’t care about experiences vs. youth, I’m Canelo. I have everything I need to win and I know exactly what I need to do.

“I’m happy to have a big celebration on Saturday night. It’s for all the Mexican fans, no matter who they support. I’m very proud to make this fight happen.

“Munguia has power and he’s a good fighter. But I’m a strong fighter too and I’m gonna show everyone again on Saturday night.

“The fight will last as long as it lasts. One thing is for sure, you are not going to want to miss it.”

JAIME MUNGUIA

“I’m so happy and excited that this fight is almost here. My team has been behind me the whole way and all the fans can expect a full out Mexican war. Make sure to tune in, you will not be disappointed.

“Canelo has a great deal of experience and has faced great fighters. I may not have the same resume, but I have youth on my side. I’m going to showcase my capabilities on Saturday night.

“We’ve worked on so much with Freddie Roach and had an amazing training camp. You’re going to see everything that we’ve learned on Saturday night.

“I’m glad that he wants to knock me out, because I come with the same mentality. I’m gonna knock him out. It’s gonna be a great fight.

“This is an amazing moment and I’m really excited to show everyone what I can do. Fighting on his undercard was one thing, but now I’m ready to step up to my moment.

“Outside the ring, Canelo has all my respect, but inside the ring, that respect goes out the window.”

EDDY REYNOSO, Canelo’s Manager & Trainer

“This is going to be a great fight between two outstanding Mexican fighters. I’m very thankful to everyone who made this fight possible.

“In the end, the most important thing is that this will be a war between two Mexican fighters who come out of the ring healthy and well. In the end, the real winner will be the country of Mexico.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, Chairman & CEO of Golden Boy Promotions

“I truly believe this will be a changing of the guard for Mexican boxing, from Canelo to Munguia. Jaime is an undefeated and incredible talent who deserves this stage and spotlight.

“Jaime has always dared to be great and Saturday night he will fulfill his dream and become world champion.”
